What is Impressions?
An impression is counted when a video’s thumbnail is shown to a viewer on YouTube.
Impressions explained
YouTube counts an impression when a thumbnail is shown on screen for long enough to be seen — for example on the home page, in search results or in suggested videos. External embeds and some surfaces are not counted.
More impressions means YouTube is showing your video to more people. Whether those impressions become views depends heavily on the thumbnail and title.
Why it matters for thumbnails
Thumbnails are the first thing viewers see, so they influence how impressions plays out on your channel. Read our thumbnail best practices to put this into practice, or browse the rest of the glossary.
