How to make a YouTube thumbnail that gets clicked
Great thumbnails aren’t about fancy software. They come from a simple process: one clear idea, one strong image, very few words. Here is that process, step by step.
Step 1: Find the hook before you open any tool
Ask: why would someone click this instead of the ten videos next to it? The answer might be a surprising result, a big transformation, a conflict, or a question. Write it down in one sentence.
If you’ve already recorded the video, look for the most striking true moment — that’s usually the thumbnail. With ThumbSpark you can import the transcript and ask the agent to find it.
Step 2: Choose one focal point
Every great thumbnail has one thing the eye goes to first: a face, an object, a result. Everything else supports it or gets removed. If you have two ideas, you have two thumbnails — test them against each other.
Step 3: Add emotion
Faces with clear expressions — surprise, joy, worry — tell viewers how the video will feel. If faces don’t fit your channel, use other emotional cues: a dramatic moment, a mess, a reveal. See faces in thumbnails.
Step 4: Write 2–5 words of text (or none)
Text should add curiosity the image can’t, and never repeat the title. Keep it big, high-contrast and short. More in thumbnail text tips.
Step 5: Make it pop at small sizes
- Use strong contrast between subject and background.
- Use bold, saturated colours — but not ten of them.
- Outline or separate the subject from the background.
- Check it at the size of a phone thumbnail with the preview tool.
Step 6: Export at the right size
Export at 1280×720, 16:9, under 2 MB. The thumbnail size guide covers all the specs.
Step 7: Test and learn
Make a second version that changes one big thing and use YouTube’s Test & compare, or swap thumbnails and compare CTR over similar periods. See how to A/B test thumbnails.
The faster way: let an AI agent design it
With ThumbSpark, you describe the video and the agent follows these same rules — one subject, emotion, short text, contrast — and proposes a thumbnail you approve before it’s generated. Your face, colours and style come from your saved AI agent.
