Guide
YouTube thumbnail size: dimensions, format and safe areas
The short answer: 1280×720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB, as JPG, PNG or GIF. Here is everything else you need to know so your thumbnail looks sharp everywhere it appears.
The official YouTube thumbnail specs
These numbers come from YouTube Help. Designing larger (for example 1920×1080) and exporting at 1280×720 keeps edges crisp.
- Resolution: 1280×720 pixels (minimum width 640 pixels).
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 — the same as a standard widescreen video.
- File size: under 2 MB for most channels.
- Formats: JPG, GIF or PNG.
- Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account.
Why 16:9 matters
YouTube shows thumbnails in a 16:9 frame almost everywhere. A square or vertical image gets letterboxed or cropped, which makes it look smaller and less professional next to competing videos.
If your image is the wrong shape, convert it with our free thumbnail resizer — it fits or fills the 1280×720 frame in your browser.
Design for the smallest size it will be seen at
The same thumbnail appears large on a TV home screen and tiny in the suggested-videos column on mobile. Design for the small version: one subject, big shapes, two to five words of text.
Preview it in a realistic feed with the thumbnail preview tool before you publish.
Safe areas: what gets covered
- The video length badge sits in the bottom-right corner.
- The progress bar for partly watched videos runs along the bottom edge.
- Badges like “New” or chapters can appear on some surfaces.
Tip: Keep text and faces out of the bottom-right corner and away from the very edges. See safe zone.
YouTube Shorts covers
Shorts are vertical (9:16), and their covers appear in the Shorts shelf and on your channel page. Keep the key content centred, since surfaces crop Shorts differently. Read more in YouTube Shorts thumbnails.
