What is Aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the proportion of an image’s width to its height, such as 16:9.
Aspect ratio explained
Regular YouTube thumbnails use 16:9 — the same shape as a widescreen video. Shorts and other vertical formats use 9:16.
Uploading the wrong ratio leads to black bars or awkward cropping. The thumbnail resizer converts any image to the right size.
Why it matters for thumbnails
Thumbnails are the first thing viewers see, so they influence how aspect ratio plays out on your channel. Read our thumbnail best practices to put this into practice, or browse the rest of the glossary.
