What is Safe zone?
The safe zone is the area of a thumbnail that won’t be covered by YouTube’s overlays.
Safe zone explained
YouTube places a timestamp in the bottom-right corner of thumbnails, and progress bars or badges can appear along the bottom. Text and faces placed there may be hidden.
Keep important text and faces away from the bottom-right corner and the very edges. Check with the thumbnail preview tool.
Why it matters for thumbnails
Thumbnails are the first thing viewers see, so they influence how safe zone plays out on your channel. Read our thumbnail best practices to put this into practice, or browse the rest of the glossary.
